Nicki Minaj: released on Dec. 15
"Only" continues to deliver on Minaj's promise that The Pink Print will be a return to her rap roots, with stripped down and drippy production from Dr. Luke, Cirkut, and J Mik. Unlike, say, "Anaconda," which relied on shock antics and a nostalgia-ridden sample from Sir Mix-A-Lot "Only" relies solely on the rapping prowess of Minaj, Drake and Weezy.
"I never f**ked Wayne, I never f**ked Drake / All my life, for f**ks sake / If I did, I'd menage with 'em, let them eat my a** like a cupcake," Minaj spits right out the gate. With a cool sense of confidence and rhymes that boast of her own sexual and rapping prowess, Minaj is taking the reins, leading into the equally vulgar and explosive rap verses from Drake and Wayne, who can't quite hold a candle to Minaj's bold statements.
The song, which is a deep, dark rap cut, may be left wanting for the rap world if it weren't for the smooth sung chorus courtesy of Brown. His quiet, controlled vocals take a bit of the intensity off the track.
Once again, "Only" proves that Minaj doesn't have to whip out her Barbie voices or Roman to command a presence, she can do it just by being herself.
