Finally, Major League Baseball (MLB) recognized mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato and her plea to perform at the World Series. A Prairie Village native, those who tuned in watched the singer's dream finally come true in the seventh game of the World Series.
DiDonato, a most celebrated opera singer, has been a longtime fan of the Kansas City Royals since her first time at a game in the late 1970s--a cherished memory from her childhood which recounts her father saving his money to take his children to a game at the ballpark.
An stounding performance, DiDonato sang the "Star-Spangled Banner" in her legendary operatic voice, which echoes Renee Fleming's Super Bowl performance--a rendition that was well-received by listeners of all stripes.
So she fell (whatever) but the nation's anthem resounded through Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City and struck a chord with ballplayers and attendees alike.
