Ready for your odd news story of the day? As reported by Billboard, Usher has decided to take a whole new approach to his album marketing campaign. He will be releasing a new single for download via specifically marked Honey Nut Cheerios boxes bought at Walmart stores across the United States.
The track is titled "Clueless" and will be available as of today.
Artists and their teams have always looked for ways to find new creative ways to market their music. This has to be up there with one of the most out there ideas. The strategy hones in a very certain market of cereal consumers who buy their food at Walmart, so this is a gamble for Usher. However, he is a strategic person and would not take such a risk without knowing the rewards.
The promotion follows a commercial released back in August for Honey Nut Cheerios featuring Usher and his track "She Came To Give It To You". The clip shows him dancing with the company mascot, Buzz The Bee and discusses the health benefits of Honey Nut Cheerios, another reason he is presumably releasing his new single this way. It will be interesting to see how long it takes for the track to find its way online once someone manages to get their hands on it.
Usher has been relatively quiet since his 2012 album Looking For Myself. He released the dance friendly single "Good Kisser" in May, but has since been quiet on the other songs. In an interview with The Fader at South By Southwest in 2013 he said about the album, "It's going to be freaking out of here, man. Space and sky, that's what it'll be. You look up, and it's everything you can imagine." It has been put on hold indefinitely, but maybe this is a move in the direction towards a release.
Fans will get a taste of the new Usher once they finish off a box of Honey Nut Cheerios. Both should be pretty tasty.
