It's not the best concept we've heard for a musical yet this year (that honor would go to I Am Marbury, a Chinese musical somewhat based on former NBA star Stephon Marbury). Still, this one's definitely up there: A musical based on Duck Dynasty. And you won't have to go to Beijing to see this one.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that Dodgers and the Rio Hotel in Las Vegas are looking to produce a musical based on the reality television stars. That publication also used this joke already but it's too good to pass up: "Not since Fiddler on the Roof has a theatrical project involved this much facial hair." It should be noted that Dodgers is a New York City theatre production company (not the Los Angeles Dodgers, as Billboard reported as of 9:45 a.m. on Thursday).
The plot of the trip will be based on the book The Duck Commander Family: How Faith, Family, and Ducks Built a Dynasty, written by the show's stars Korie and Willie Robertson.
The show is looking at a Spring 2015 release, and will music and lyrics by the team of Robert Morris, Steven Morris and Joe Shane, while Jeff Calhoun, best known for Newsies, will handle direction. No cast decisions have been made but you can be assured that none of the Duck Commander crew will star as themselves.
The Hollywood Reporter accurately questions whether the television series still has enough gas in the tank to promote a musical. The show has taken a hit in the ratings as of recent seasons, drawing in half as many viewers as it has a few years ago. Controversy over Phil Robertson's comments on a series of issues turned many off to the program.
