Lorde is looking to make you cry on the final song from her The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 soundtrack. After a slew of songs from the latest Hunger Games movie have hit the Internet, today (Nov. 14), the OST's last song, a Lorde sung cover of Bright Eyes' "Ladder Song" arrived online, and it's just as heartbreaking as you'd imagine.
In the context of Mockingjay, which finds Panem's heroine Katniss Everdeen in the midst of a massive civil war, "Ladder Song" takes on a whole new meaning. "If I got to go first / I'll do it on my terms / I'm tired of traitors / Always changing sides / They were friends of mine," Lorde sings with a noted tear in her voice, calling to mind the drama of Peeta and Katniss.
Speaking of Lorde's voice, though she's largely known for her deeper tones, she takes on a higher range for "Ladder Song," making her voice sound much smaller than usual. The choice here was key; it sounds like Lorde is about 10 seconds away from sobbing and she seems far more youthful, just adding to the emotion of the already heartbreaking tune.
