Lykke Li is a 28-year-old Swede whose indie pop has made a decent dent in the U.S. charts since her debut album in 2008. She recently took time out during a recent London show to pay homage to Drake with a worthy cover of "Hold On We're Going Home."
Currently still in support of her May release I Never Learn, the singer has a pretty interesting background, which she shared with the Telegraph earlier this year.
"I used to stand on a chair and sing ... I got booed out several times," she said of her early career in bars. "I just had to do it. It is the only thing that feeds my soul. If I wasn't doing this I'd probably be dead. Some people do heroin, I have my music ... It is the most beautiful gift of all. Everything that people criticise when you're a child — 'you're so sensitive, you're so complicated' — is a great gift as an artist. All of a sudden you find yourself in this world with other artists where you're accepted, and that's all we ever want: to be accepted."
Eventually she met a producer who helped her out.
"He saw my potential and my ability to work really hard," Li said. "I had 10 demos and he slaughtered them: 'This is s--t and this is s--t.' I didn't get offended, I just wanted to know what was s--t about them. Then everyone in Sweden started fighting about finding me and I thought, 'This place is too small, I've got to get out of here.'"
She appears to be coping well with fame.
"I drink whisky," she admitted. "A lot, actually. And I love champagne — especially champagne and marijuana. My father told me that was the ultimate high. I do everything: I'll have a green juice then a melted chocolate ice cream. I stay up very late, I get up very early. Life's too f--king short."
Preach, girl. Here's that Drake cover:
Fans also got a behind-the-scenes look when she posted several clips of her practicing the song last week.
