Carrie Underwood has a highly anticipated compilation — Greatest Hits: Decade #1 — coming out on Dec. 9, but there's still one song no one has heard yet. That'd be "Little Toy Guns," one of two new songs (along with "Something in the Water"). Of course, the latter has already gotten the single treatment, but there has been nary a peep from Underwood's camp about "Guns" until now. In a recent interview, Carrie mentioned the tune.
"There's a little girl and she hears her parents fighting, as unfortunately a lot of kids do," she told The Country Vibe. "So it's basically her saying, 'I wish their words weren't real. I wish they were like little toy guns and they didn't hurt you.'"
A heart-wrenching song about domestic abuse? Sounds like Carrie is going to bring the lumber, per usual, and sadly, she said this one is personal.
"I've seen it first hand from different people in my life and seen how the tumultuous parental relationship between each other can affect a child," Underwood said. "So that's kind of what it's about, but it's a really tempo driven song as well, so it's kind of a bit of a juxtaposition as far as the story content and the music."
The thought of this type of tune coming from such a power-house vocalist even has Rolling Stone talking. They said, "The album also includes never-before-heard writing session worktapes of three songs and a duet with Vince Gill on the classic hymn, "How Great Thou Art," recorded at the ACM Presents: Girls' Night Out show in 2011."
Earlier this month, Underwood hosted the CMA Awards with Brad Paisley. The two poked fun at President Obama and Taylor Swift, with Swift getting the song treatment (via People).
"Who's going to fill her shoes?" Underwood and Paisley sang. "Who's going to stand that tall? Who's going to be country and poppy and sing a song called Tim McGraw? We're sad because it looks like New York's gain is Nashville's loss. Just going to have to shake it off."
