Paul McCartney stopped by Late Night with Jimmy Fallon last night in support of his upcoming album, New. He performed two songs off the record, "New" and "Save Us" as well as the Beatles hit "Lady Madonna."
Before they sat down to chat, McCartney and Fallon performed a skit in which they switched accents. Fallon is pretty excited because everything he says sounds cool with a Liverpool accent. Macca does his best to put on an American accent, which doesn't quite work out, but is hilarious nonetheless.
Fallon begins the interview asking McCartney how he picks out his setlists.
"I just imagine I'm going to the show," McCartney told him. "What would I like to hear him do? So I start there. You know, people pay a lot of money to come to the show, so I don't want to do some big crazy set that I alone want to see. So I start with those, and I work down to other songs I think might be interesting or new then finally songs I want to do."
They talk about what it is like playing stadium shows and what shows McCartney has seen lately. Fallon goes all fan-boy and recounts the story of running into McCartney at the Rolling Stones show and listening to the Stones play a Beatles song. He claims the experience caused his "drinking problem."
He later asks McCartney how he goes about writing new songs.
"Sometimes, you kind of just sit down a do it," he says. "It had a period at the beginning of this album when I was first dating Nancy, and I was starting to write some stuff. ...She was in New York; I was in England, so I knew she was five hours behind. So I would drop my little daughter off at school, come back, write a song, and then ring her up, 'Do you want to hear a song?' It was a great motivation. "
McCartney also reveals that he invented the "selfie" and "photobombing" before they were cool. Check out his upcoming album out Oct. 14.
