MercyMe released their national debut album in 2001, seven years after forming. One day short of ten months later, the project went RIAA Gold and the lead single, a song Bart Millard had written about his father's death, had already made it to #1 on the Christian charts. Roughly 18 months after releasing, the song was played on a Dallas, Texas mainstream radio station and other stations outside of the CCM realm quickly added it to their own playlists. "I Can Only Imagine" went on to become the most played song of the year.
Since then, the popular pop/contemporary band has continued to make great music. In their history, MercyMe has produced over 20 #1 multi-format Christian radio singles and four consecutive mainstream radio hits ("I Can Only Imagine," "Here With Me," "Homesick," and "So Long Self").
