It may have seemed like Ed Sheeran was gearing up for a rap career with all the hip-hop influences on his latest album x and his Hoodie Allen collaboration "All About It," but he's not leaving his roots. Today (Dec. 2), the "Don't" singer released a new track for the penultimate episode of Sons of Anarchy, a true and bluesy cover of Foy Vance's "Make It Rain."
Channeling the raspiest part of his vocals, Sheeran is all passion on his Vance cover, not like that's new territory for the singer-songwriter.
The slow-burning anthem features minimal instrumentation, played softly in the mix to allow Sheeran's vocals to shine through with a massive punch.
"When the sins of my father / Weigh down in my soul / And the pain of my mother / Will not let me go / Well, I knew they can't come far from the sky / To refine the purest of canes / And even though I know this fire brings me pain / Even so, and just the same / Make it rain," Sheeran belts out in the opening verse and chorus of the cover.
This track, which brings Sheeran back to his own roots and the roots of rock, continues to show off his diversity as an artist and it's yet another achievement in his ever-expanding discography.
