During Kendrick Lamar's performance last night on the "cypher" portion of the 2013 BET Hip-Hop Awards, he and his TDE crew rapped about the competitive nature of the hip-hop game. Black Hippy cohorts ScHoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, Jay Rock and Isaiah Rashad took turns before Lamar stepped up to bad, ready to thrown down. None of their verses were as direct as Lamar's. He takes a jab at Drake as he spits over Mobb Deep's "Shook Ones Part II."
Lamar had named Drake on his 'Control' verse back in August, and Drake responded by basically saying that Lamar wasn't a threat to him. Looks like Lamar heard the message and had a few choice words to say about it, even mentioning Drake's recently released album, Nothing Was The Same.
"Yeah, and nothing's been the same since they dropped 'Control' / And tucked a sensitive rapper back in his pajama clothes / Ha ha. Joke's on you! / High five."
He then takes shots at his peers on a general level in a series of pointed lines, "I got my thumb on hip-hop and my foot it the back of yo ass / Aftermath get the last laugh," "You're career ain't shit unless it got some Kendrick in it," and finally "Ya scared to death, scared to look in the mirror when Kendrick is near ya / King Kendrick."
According to Rolling Stone, BET had an idea that this verse would be controversial and urged fans to tweet their reactions to the verse with the hashtag "#KendricksVerse," which they reported became a trending topic almost immediately.
We are just waiting for Drake's response. Watch the performance here, and let us know what you think in the comments section below!
