The BET Hip-Hop Awards were full of performances, a few more performances and, lest we forget, the occasional presentation of an award.
The performances were what viewers truly tuned in to see however. The most anticipated performance of the night was certainly Kendrick Lamar, performing alongside ScHoolboy Q. and Jay Rock during one of the night's many cyphers. Lamar shook the hip-hop world with his guest verse during Big Sean's "Control," declaring himself the "king of New York," despite being from Compton, CA. His verse during the awards was quality enough, if not particularly shocking.
The most over-the-top performance (even beating out 2 Chainz's stage of scantily-clad dancers) was Diddy, Rick Ross DJ Khaled and French Montana. Diddy, often considered warily by the hip-hop world, was on top of his game, but the crown he opted to wear was a tad garish. And of course, any public appearance by Ross or Khaled is bound to be full of gold. Performance of the night has to go to the show's closer, Bone Thugz-N-Harmony, who haven't lost a step.
So who won the awards?
Going back to Lamar's "Control" verse, the controversy and analysis generated probably paid off, at least during this program. Lamar won for Lyricist of The Year, MVP of The Year, and good kid, m.A.A.d city won Album of The Year. Producer of the Year went to Mike WiLL Made It, who worked with Kanye West and Lil Wayne among others (although Miley Cyrus got the most attention), Rookie of The Year went to A$AP Ferg (an upset over Earl Sweatshirt in our opinion), and Drake won for Best Music Video for his "Started From The Bottom."
