Jennifer Nettles is looking to continue to branch out during her year of independence. Best known for her work with Sugarland, the vocalist released her debut solo album That Girl during January and now she's ready for the Great White Way: Nettles will make her Broadway premiere starring in Chicago, according to CMT.
It's a tough position she's walking into and she deserves kudos for having the guts: Not only is she taking the role of Roxie Hart, the lead role that was filled by Broadway favorite Amy Spanger, who had played Hart several times. Also consider that Nettles hasn't had any theatre experience since starring in a 4-H production during high school. Good luck!
Nettles is set for an eight week run on the Broadway Stage beginning in February of next year. Rolling Stone notes that the performer has yet to plan any live music dates after a busy 2014, which means that she'll be able to accommodate more Chicago dates if her first two months are a success.
"It's fun, it's lighthearted-a little lighthearted ditty about murder!" she said on the Today show when asked what appealed to her about Chicago. "It's very fun and the dancing, to get to learn all of that...I can't wait."
Nettles got some practice performing with Broadway stars (and dealing with the pressure of living up) during the CMA Country Christmas special, where she performed with Idina Menzel while also emceeing the night, an event she's hosted now five times.
We'll see if she can live up to Dolly Parton in 9 to 5.
