Eminem teamed up with Kendrick Lamar for The Marshall Mathers LP 2 track “Love Game,” which leaked today online. The two rap about their romantic misfortunes over a sample of Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders’ 1965 track “Game of Love.”
The song begins when Slim comes home to find his girlfriend cheating on him. "Something is burning I can't figure out what / It's either lust or a cloud of dust," he raps. "Left my girl in the house alone / Is that my soon-to-be-spouse?” Sex noises play in the background building up to he ultimately confirming his suspicions. He then attacks his unfaithful lover in a rapid-fire laundry list of rappers — not unlike Kendrick’s list on ‘Control’ — his fiancé has hooked up. “Used to be my fiancé, until you sucked on Wayne, Andre and Kanye / LeBron, Akon, Jay, Lil' Jon, Raekwon, Ma$e, Polow Da Don, Drake, Dante Ross, James Conway, Kwame.”
Lamar then steps up to tell his story. The good kid, m.A.A.d city antagonist Sherane shows up again on K. Dot’s verse. “You know I want you as bad as Benjamin, I’m delirious / I want you bad as the head shattered on George Zimmerman,” he raps, comparing his desire for justice in his relationship for justice for Trayvon Martin’s murder.
Em joins in with Lamar on the next verse, and they have a friendly battle of wits. Slim finishes off the verse imagining the brutal murder of his unfaithful fiancé’s lover. The song ends after Em shouts, “I have infinite hate in my blood / It’s mainly because of the game of …” and the sample track plays through.
Despite its “heartbreaking" message of the song, the tone is very playful, which contrasts and almost masks the pointed and blantely misogynisitc lines the two rappers spit.
Marshall Mathers LP 2 is due out Nov. 5 via Interscope. Check out the “Love Game” leak here, and let us know what you think in the comments section below.
