While thousands took to social media to express condolences to the families of the two NYPD officers killed Saturday, Dec. 20, the incident also made tempers flare across the Internet. The politics of the situation were unavoidable, as the shooter, who also died in the incident, had previously cited Eric Garner's controversial death as a motive for his actions.
Perhaps the hottest celebrity take came from rapper The Game, who set off a firestorm after the following Instagram statement, via VIBE:
I guess y'all "can't breathe" either. #RIPEricGarner#AllLivesMatter #ShitHasToChange #Now
The Compton hip-hop artist rushed to defend his statement as the negative comments flew in. Game said his words were in direct response to the recent viral picture of a New York policeman wearing custom "I CAN BREATHE" T-shirts.
So he launched a lengthy tirade that included the following:
Do I like police: NO !!! Do I hate police: NO !!! Have I experienced more police abusing their authority than not: YES !!! So that's why "I" say F--- THE POLICE !!! That's "MY OPINION".... Does that mean I think it's dope that 2 innocent cops were murdered: NOPE. But does it change my view on crooked police: NOPE !!!
The fallout from Game's Instagram rant is not immediately apparent, but he has been part of the Ferguson/Garner discussion since releasing his tribute to Michael Brown: "Don't Shoot."
He recently signed on to judge One Shot, a new, rap-centric reality show that will also feature T.I., Tech N9ne, RZA and others. This after a busy fall that included the release of his new album, Blood Moon: Year of the Wolf and the announcement of a 2015 album.
