M.I.A. documentary begins filming under BRITDOC backing

The Steve Loveridge M.I.A. documentary has begun shooting in London backed by BRITDOC as co-producers, according to Hollywood Reporter. The documentary follows the life of controversial musician M.I.A. using hundreds of hours of exclusive, unreleased footage shot by M.I.A. and her close friends.

The films backers call M.I.A. a "magnet for controversy from her arrival on the music scene in 2003." She is both vilified as a terrorist-supporting diva and praised as a creative genius, activist and innovator. The singer fled the civil war in Sri Lanka at age 11, arriving in London and eventually hustling her way to a record deal, the article reports.

She and Loveridge met at St. Martins Art College in London and have been collaborating ever since. This film will be his first feature. The article also mentions Josephine Rose, of the Wiggin law firm in London, as executive producers. Under BRITDOC, the films directors are Jess Serach, Sandra Whipham, Maxyne Franklin and Beadie Finzi. The U.K. distributor's latest theatrical release was Rick Rowley's Sundance winner Dirty Wars.

Early clips of the documentary surfaced over the summer, featuring footage and interviews with Diplo, Kanye West, Spike Jonze, Jimmy Iovine and more.

The name and release date for the video have not yet been released. We will update you with more information as it comes.
