Eminem beats Lorde, One Direction; places three songs in Digital Downloads Top 10

Around a month ago, it seemed that Katy Perry was the queen of the digital downloads charts, placing three songs in the Top 10. This week a new contender takes the throne:

EMINEM IS A CHART GOD (CHART GOD)

The last Lorde's "Royals" wasn't atop the Digital Downloads Chart was when Eminem's "Rap God" debuted with 270,000 downloads. The rapper debuted high again, as his single "The Monster" topped the chart with 373,000 downloads. The placement is Eminem's ninth time topping the chart, tying him with Katy Perry. First place? His guest star, Rihanna, who added her 13th instance at no. 1 with the song.

Hype for next week's release, The Marshall Mathers LP 2, seriously boosted interest in the emcee's last single, "Survival" as well. The track had fallen back to no. 34 in the charts, but saw a 268 percent increase in downloads, moving it to no. 6 with 140,000 in sales. "Rap God" may have lost a place, falling to no. 9, but it got a sales boost of 23 percent (131,000 downloads).

ANOTHER DEBUT

One Direction may have gotten lost in the mix with all the hoopla surrounding Eminem, but the "biggest boy band in the world" (as described by Jon "Union Jack" Niles) still managed to move 305,000 downloads, a total that would have topped the list nearly any other week.

THE USUAL SUSPECTS

Three songs you've gotten used to seeing near the top of the Digital Downloads Top 10 stuck around, hoping to jump back into contention for the top spot next week.

"Royals" by Lorde fell to no. 3 for the first time in nearly two months, selling 196,000 copies. Perry's "Roar" jumped back to no. 4 after slipping briefly to no. 8, increasing its sales by 28 percent and moving 141,000 downloads. Avicii's "Wake Me Up!" also saw a slight decrease, settling at no. 5 with 140,000 units.

CONFUSION

There seemed to be some rough-going over at Nielsen last week, as Billboard claimed that either positions "six and seven" or "seven and eight" were "missing." That contradicted its earlier statement that Passenger locked down no. 7 with "Let Her Go" (a 65 percent jump in sales, with 139,000 downloads). They also marked OneRepublic at no. 9 as well as Eminem, ruling it a virtual tie between "Rap God" and "Counting Stars." Ties are also very rare for the company to declare.

That leaves one position, no. 8 by our count, unaccounted for. Our theory: The charts have featured a new Justin Bieber song for many of the previous weeks, as part of his "Music Mondays" promotion. It's logical that the no. 8 spot could be his most recent release, "Bad Day," as it seems to be around the spot where his other Monday songs have charted.
