There were never any real doubts that Bruno Mars' latest Unorthodox Jukebox single "Gorilla" was about raw, down and dirty sex. It's right there in the chorus -- "You and me baby, making love like Gorilla" isn't very subtle. But now, the song has reached a whole new level of naughty with a "G-Mix" done by the always saucy R. Kelly and none other than mega-producer/"Blurred Lines" collaborator Pharrell.
The extended euphemisms begin right off the bat with Pharrell's rap verse, wherein he turns yoga into a dirty, dirty way to tone. "Say hello to your sisters and let's try some yoga / I'm Yoda / It's cold / But let's get it popping like soda / One will make a bridge and two will make a poser / One will do the downward dog and I will be the cobra," he smoothly rolls out.
From Pharrell's rap, the song continues with Mars' original arrangement for a verse and a chorus, a lovely reprieve from the overtly sexual dialogue Pharrell brought into the game.
But, of course, that's all before R. Kelly comes in. The notorious sex god, R. Kelly takes things to a whole new "Gorilla" level, adding a hot energy that Mars only wishes he could reach.
"I'm an anaconda in your garden / Baby girl, I'm exploring deep down in your forest / Like Ooo ooo ooo, Aah aah ahh" Kelly begins before eventually stripping away all metaphors and promising to "make that p---- growl."
Though all nuances have now been thrown away, the R. Kelly verse somehow works really well in Mars' track. The extended Amazon forest and jungle metaphors add a level of cleverness not heard in the original "Gorilla" mix, and as much as Mars tries, he will just never exude the same sexual energy as Kelly.
The only complaint about this remix is that it feels really disconnected -- it's pretty unlikely that Pharrell, R. Kelly and Bruno Mars were all in the studio at the same time, and the "Gorilla" G-Mix sounds like it. Regardless, bask in the new version of the song by listening below, but be sure to have a shower close by. This thing is dirrrrrty.
