David Byrne, best known for fronting The Talking Heads and collaborating with St. Vincent, is resurrecting one of his most recent projects to benefit the relief mission in the Philippines. Here Lies Love, a play/live album put together by Byrne and Fatboy Slim will play for one night at Terminal 5 in New York City, with all proceeds going to Doctors Without Borders, specifically to aid the organization's work following the typhoon in the Philippines.
Here Lies Love, the studio album. was released in 2010 as a portrayal of one of the most notorious Filipinos of all time: then first lady Imelda Marcos. She and her husband, Ferdinand Marcos, have long been accused of using his political position to lead an absurdly luxurious lifestyle, most notably her collection of 2,700 pairs of shoes. The album revolved around Marcos growing up and her relationship with housekeeper Estrella Cumpas. The album featured a number of female vocalists sharing the roles of its two protagonists, including Florence Welch and Santigold.
Here Lies Love was staged as a musical of sorts during 2010, not including its vocalists, and would go onto win the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical. Byrne said that the original cast, which he described as mostly Filipino, would return for the November 25 showing. Byrne himself will also perform his own vocals from the album.
"The show is about the resiliency of the Philippine people," he said in a statement. "It couldn't be more timely. Upon hearing about this tragedy, the cast contacted me about doing a show to raise money for relief efforts. Most of our cast is Filipino, and all of us feel the same way. It's personal for all of us."
