Detroit's gathered acclaims for many music genres, from Motown to modern hip-hop, and from classic rock to current indie rock, it offers a little bit of everything. One genre that doesn't get much recognition outside of the city itself is electronic, and Detroit's role in its development. The city will now have two music festivals dedicated to that culture, thanks to the announcement that DEMF (the Detroit Electronic Music Festival) would be making a return in 2014.
The conundrum this poses for many EDM fans in the area is that they don't believed DEMF ever actually went away. The festival, which was founded in 2000, but changed its name to Fuse-In during 2003 before becoming Movement, the name of Detroit's other electronic music festival. Movement will still take place during May at Hart Plaza, its traditional home, and the new DEMF will take place in early July at Ford Field.
The close proximity of the events may also create problems for one or both events, as they occur only six weeks apart from each other, and fans may not be willing to shell out for both. The "winner" in this case will probably come down to who can book the better lineup.
