Apparently Grimes isn't vegan enough for New York band DIIV. It all started when Grimes posted on her Tumblr that she loved the new Anchorman themed Ben and Jerry's butterscotch ice cream called Scotchy Scotch Scotch, released to promote the upcoming sequel.
The artist, real name Claire Boucher, did say, "1 day hiatus from veganism is being had starting now." But still, people didn't respond well. After she received criticism for her ice cream preference, she responded.
"I like to encourage people towards a type of veganism that is inviting and accepting. For the longest time I was vegan but I just wouldn't say I was because of the bad reputation of veganism. Most of the vegans i know are dogmatic assholes, and it completely turns people off."
She continued by explaining that Ben and Jerry's is the only kind of ice cream she will eat because of their ethical standards. "Ben and Jerrys is the only brand of ice cream i ever eat. their cows are treated ethically and beyond that they put a ton of money into researching green hydrocarbon freezers that would use alternative refrigerants which (unlike current freezer gases) do not contribute to global warming."
The backlash has since died down, mostly. But Grimes didn't provide a sufficient enough explanation for DIIV, though, as the band took to Twitter calling her out again. The band (it's unclear which member) Tweeted: "grimes' version of veganism is called 'NOT vegan', even if a dairy cow is 'treated ethically' doesn't mean u aren't consuming/exploiting her."
Some people just want to have the last word when it comes to personal politics and ethics.
