Rolling Stone reports the United Nations has announced Seattle hip-hop duo Macklemore and Ryan Lewis will be joining its Free & Equal campaign as "equality champions, meaning they will help spread campaign messages about equality for the LGBTQ community via social media.
"We're so honored to be working with the United Nations and Free & Equal to help spread a message of equality and respect," Macklemore said in a statement. "Ryan and I have always believed that human rights are for everyone — no exceptions."
This message is something the band has been championing for a while. The song "Same Love" on their debut album confronts the issue of marriage equality and Ben Haggerty (Macklemore) was the voice of You Can Play's campaign to fight homophobia in sports, music and entertainment. He released a video saying, "Don't let being gay hold you back, if you're straight don't hold others back. Anti-gay language has no place in sports or music. If you can play, you can play."
They duo also brought up equality in their American Music Awards acceptance speech, pointing out racial inequality and profiling, especially with relation to Trayvon Martin.
Other spokepeople for the UN's program include Ricky Martin, South African singer Chaka Chaka, Bollywood actress Celina Jaitly and Brazilian singer Daniela Mercury. The UN lauched the platform back in July.
