Just three days after launching a Kickstarter campaign to record and release their fifth and final studio album, legendary girl group TLC has reached its goal. After initially asking fans for $150,000 for the untitled new album, the "Waterfalls" group has surpassed its goal by over $20,000... with some help from none other than Katy Perry.
The Kickstarter campaign for the new album, which is still running, has reached $172,939 as of press time, surpassing the initial goal set by surviving TLC members T-Boz and Chilli. Despite reaching the $150 benchmark, TLC is still accepting fan donations for additional production and album costs.
"The initial goal of $150,000 will go towards a writing session in the studio with a producer and engineer," the group wrote in its Kickstarter post. "The money beyond that will go to booking music producers, writing sessions, mixing sessions, recording sessions, and SO much more. We want to work with the best in the business, so the more we raise means access to the best."
The Kickstarter is set to run through Feb. 19, and TLC shows no signs of slowing down the fundraiser. This morning (Jan. 22), Chilli announced that she and T-Boz are adding more incentives to the Kickstarter project today.
TLC reached its Kickstarter goal with the help of a major current pop player: Katy Perry.
This means that Perry will be the winner of a sleepover with T-Boz in L.A., a vinyl copy of the new album, a TLC scrapbook, a dance class, fanmail, digital album and more.
Not a bad trade-off!
