You wouldn't believe it, but it's been more than four years since Jay Z has had a righteous solo tour. He shared the stage with Justin Timberlake this summer, played a handful of shows for his hometown of Brooklyn last year, and toured the world with Kanye West as part of Watch The Throne, but by himself? Nope. Now, having released Magna Carta Holy Grail over the summer, Hov was finally ready to take himself, by himself, on the road again.
Saturday night's tour kickoff happened at one of the most slept-on cities in hip-hop, at St. Paul's Xcel Center. The album whose name marks the "Magna Carta World Tour" was well represented, with seven of the album's tracks making it into the shuffle, although they tended toward the front of the set. And even with those seven songs in play, they still didn't water down all the hits featured on a setlist that included 25 tracks (28, if you consider the medley of "Jigga What, Jigga Who," "Dirt Off Your Shoulder," and "I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me)").
Jay may not have the same larger-than-life stage show as his Throne partner West, but his cohorts onstage were still A-list material. Timbaland, the producer for much of Magna Carta Holy Grail, served as DJ alongside a four-piece backing band, and even got a five-minute solo session to show off his skills midway through the concert.
