The top question on the minds of those who attended Orion Fest last year was where the festival would take place for its third installment, not whether it would happen at all. C3, the promoter of the festival curated by Metallica, told The Detroit News that the festival wouldn't take place during 2014 due to conflicts with the band's planned European tour dates. In retrospect, we media-types probably could have looked at the band's cramped schedule and guessed as much. C3 clarified that this isn't to say that the festival won't return for 2015, but it couldn't say for sure where it would be located.
Orion Fest 2013 took place in Detroit, after the initial 2012 event occurred in Atlantic City, NJ. Initial reports from the band indicated that the festival had faced some stumbling blocks at the New Jersey showing in explanation for its move to Detroit this year. However, it hasn't been indicated whether Orion will forever be changing locations, or if it plans on settling down in Michigan.
The festival has gained renown for showcasing a variety of music, on top of Metallica's heavy style. The first year featured alt-rockers such as the Arctic Monkeys, and even country headliner Eric Church. The 2013 festival brought a does of EDM with Bassnectar, and Metallica shared the headlining role with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The band has played both days both years, playing the entirety of its albums Ride The Lightning and Metallica during 2012, and Kill 'Em All this year.
Metallica fans might be bummed that the band won't be bringing its festival back next summer, but they can look forward to another event involving the band this Sunday: Metallica will be playing a show in Antarctica, which will be broadcasted at a later date.
