Spotify will allow users to select individual tracks on free version of mobile app according to company source

Way back when we were innocent and new to the app-world of smartphones and we thought everything was free (like a week ago), we were a little disappointed to find out that the phone version of Spotify didn't work exactly like the version on our laptop. You couldn't just choose an album or a song to stream. You have to choose a genre, and then Spotify will assign you random songs. What is this? Pandora?

However, an unverified report from an anonymous source within Spotify has informed Billboard that the service app will begin allowing the selection of individual songs to make your own playlists this week.

According to the source, the company will make an official announcement of the new functions on Wednesday at a press conference in New York City.

Now, it won't be as simple as just picking tracks and listening to them, at leads according to the same source. The new system will let listeners choose a number of songs to compile a playlist, which will then be played back to the listener in a shuffled manner (a limited number of times, as well). If the listener doesn't choose enough songs to compile a playlist (an official number hasn't been given yet), then the service will fill in the gaps with random tracks deemed similar to those already on the list. All playback will of course be interspersed with advertisements.

Spotify announced another slew of features this week, although they had less to do with customer experience and more to do with easing relationships between the service and recording artists. As of this week, performers will be able to trace the play of their songs on the service.
