Each and every week we put together our favorite tracks that had premiered a few days prior into one magnificent mixtape to share with you and your friends. This time around we've decided to share new songs from Sia, Four Tet, Shlohmo, Courtney Barnett and more right here!
Check out the latest in entertainment news right here!
Torres, A.K.A. Mackenzie Scott, starts off her upcoming album, Sprinter, with the misleading, opening track "Strange Hellos." Since the Brooklyn-based indie rocker debuted this track this past week, we decided to open our weekly mixtape with the suitable song. Starting off as a surprisingly subtle, softer tune, this awkward greeting song (see what I did there?) soon becomes one of the most rockin' songs of the new year! Check it out below!
RIYL: PJ Harvey, Emily Haines/Metric, Sharon Van Etten
We heard the newest song from Rye Pines, "Pessimist," this week and just couldn't wait to share this incredible track with you. It really speaks for itself, but we can kind of describe it as an angst-filled, garage rock and punk mix of pure enjoyment. Listen below!
RIYL: Modest Mouse, Cloud Nothings
Courtney Barnett is going to take over in 2015 - we're calling it right now. She's already made a huge impact over the last months of 2014, so her newest track from this week, "Pedestrian at Best," fittingly blows us away once again. With punk/grundge -influenced composition and talk-singing vocals, we're reminded of a lot of angsty bands of the past with a unique, modern twist that is all Barnett. Watch the new music video for this song below!
RIYL: Nirvana, Screaming Females, Big Eyes
The compositions from Shlohmo, A.K.A producer Henry Laufer, jump from electronica to sludge-inspired pop music with indie rock hooks. This week, he released the new track "Buried," which really sets him apart from others in the instrumental, electronic-leaning genres. Listen to this new song below!
RIYL: My Brightest Diamond, Dntel, Autechre
Last week, Glen Hansard (the movie Once, frontman of the Swell Season) announced one of the most ambitious and exciting new projects that is sure to have plenty of music enthusiasts... well, enthused! Hansard is releasing a covers EP in tribute to late Songs: Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co. mastermind Jason Molina, entitled It Was Triumph We Once Proposed...Songs of Jason Molina. Listen to his cover of "Being In Love," which was originally off of Songs: Ohia's 2000 album The Lioness.
Lady Lamb the Beekeeper, A.K.A singer-songwriter Aly Spaltro, released her latest track, "Spat Out Spit," this week, making us second-guess everything we thought we knew about the usually folk-inspired artist. Mixing a kind of experimental indie with big band and even some call and response inspired rounds, this is easily one of our favorite songs in a long time.
RIYL: Wye Oak, Cat Power, Sia
The spastic, melodic number "Tiger" by Krill shows us the depth of the relatively new indie rock band from Boston. Reminiscent of other nasal-vox Bostonian bands of the last 20 years, Krill is sure to usher in a new era for New England, right after that Super Bowl win, too!
RIYL: Local Natives, Owls, Dismemberment Plan
"Bawl, Cry, Wail" is a simple little Americana-inspired song from Chicago's In Tall Buildings, A.K.A. Erik Hall. The mounting elements of the track are sure to make fans out of every new listener that take a listen this week. So we suggest you do so! Listen below.
RIYL: Bon Iver, Ryan Adams, Jim James
Our final two artists of this week's mixtape need no comparison or real introduction. First we have the new track "Makondi," from the always impressive Four Tet. Working with British drummer Nick Woodmansey, aka Emanative, we're treated to some great, jazzy music! Listen right here! Lastly, we have a brand new song from pop music's most bizarre talent, Sia. She's taking over the world these days, and we couldn't be happier for the artist. This week, she released the brand new song "Salted Wound," which will appear on the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack. Listen to this right here!
This week's mixtape is perfect for the sad news that we're getting six more weeks of winter, according to Punxsutawney Phil. So stay warm and listen to some great new music with you friends!
