Kim Shattuck was unexpectedly dropped from touring as Pixies bassist following the exit from founding member Kim Deal. She has spoken out about the disappointment with NME.
There was apparently a verbal agreement that she would be touring with the band through 2014, so getting fired from the gig was a surprising turn of events for the musician.
"I was surprised. Everything had gone well, the reviews were all good and the fans were super-nice about everything. They were like, 'We love you, New Kim!'," she said. "We said goodbye at the airport and the following morning the manager called me and said: 'The band has made the decision to go with another bass player.' I was shocked."
Though it isn't exactly clear why they decided to let Shattuck go, she has some speculation on how the decision went down.
"I get the feeling they're more introverted people than I am. Nobody really talked about deep issues, at least out loud. There was a show at the Mayan in Los Angeles where I got overly enthusiastic and jumped into the crowd, and I know they weren't thrilled about that. When I got offstage the manager told me not to do that again. I said, 'Really, for my own safety?' And he said, 'No, because the Pixies don't do that.'"
She's officially not part of the band anymore, but she said that she's still a fan and just prefers that they would have told her face to face, as opposed to the phone call she got from the band's manager.
Paz Lenchatin has officially been named as Shattuck's replacement for upcoming dates, which include a headlining gig in June at the festival Field Day in London.
