Katy Perry may have had the most watched Super Bowl Halftime Show ever but Missy Elliott was the real winner, as sales of her albums increased by more than 2,500 percent, according to Forbes. The three songs that the emcee performed as a medley—"Get Ur Freak On," "Work It" and "Lose Control"—also saw a combined 978 percent increase in singles sales. That translates to more than 71,000 downloads for those three songs alone.
Downloads wasn't the only music format that saw a huge boost for Elliott following the performance. Spotify reported that she was also the big winner over Katy Perry and Lenny Kravitz when it came to streaming. Although viewers began streaming the headliner's music hours before the game and kept it up throughout (raising her listens by 85 percent) and Kravitz got a 103 percent boost, Elliott blew up with a 676 percent increase in streams following the show. That includes an 896 percent increase for "Work It," 922 percent jump for "Get Ur Freak On" and a mind-blowing 1,396 percent increase for "Lose Control."
All of the renewed interest makes us wonder of course: When the heck is Elliott going to release some new music? Her last album came during 2005 with The Cookbook, which supplied "Lose Control" to the world. She has a made a few rare appearances over the last few years, including appearing alongside K-Pop star G-Dragon at K-Con in Los Angeles for a new song.
One can only hope that all the mania following the Super Bowl will inspire her to kick it into another gear.
