Drake may be one of the biggest rappers in the music industry right now, but there is a world he has not stepped into yet? The "Trophies" rapper appears to be headed to the arena of battle rapping, a merciless, attack-style of rap, or at least is hinting at it, appearing at a press conference yesterday, Feb. 7, for an upcoming event by King of the Dot, "Blackout 5," via MTV.
Instead of being in sunny Los Angeles with the rest of the music community partying, Drake was supporting the underground rap community in his hometown of Toronto. At the press conference, he was there to offer more than just moral support.
He surprised everyone when he said he would be willing to judge the co-main even battle between Hitman Holls and Shotty Horroh and even offered to wager $10,000 on the event, saying "I'll put 10 racks up."
Toronto-based company King of the Dot's slogan is "Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is ...," so Drake is doing just that.
At the conference, he was asked if he would be willing to enter the ring himself at some point. He responded that he would love to, but he has to deal with the ramifications of what would happen afterward.
"It's tough for me because it's a no-holds-barred competitive interaction and the problem with that is I have to go back to my life after that," Drake said. "I've always struggled with that. I'd love to get into the scene, but I have obligations ... I have corporate stuff going on."
Doing a battle like this would be an excellent way for Drake to squash all those memes about his emotions.
Outside the rap-battle world, Drake is up for three Grammys tonight, Feb. 8 -- one as a featured artist on "Tuesday" and two for "1-100 / The Catch Up" in Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance. Watch the press conference below with King of the Dot:
