Many viewers were vaguely creeped out when Shia LaBeouf read a passionate ode to Sia before the Australian pop star was due to perform at the 2015 Grammys last night. After all, the actor has had carried out a streak of bizarre actions during recent years. Good news however: That letter came from Sia's husband, Erik Anders Lang, so what was potentially borderline stalker was actually quite romantic and heartfelt (from Us Magazine).
What is true is that Sia wasn't aware the tribute was coming. Lang and LaBeouf—who recently appeared in the music video for the performer's "Elastic Heart"—worked together to make it work.
Sia and Lang were married during 2014, and it makes sense that he wouldn't want to read his poem in front of the biggest names in music. After all, his wife hasn't faced a crowd in months, performing "Chandelier" while standing in a corner of the set, as Kristen Wiig and Maddie Ziegler did the iconic dance routine from the music video. Some wondered how she would accept her awards if any of her nominations had paid out, and a camera toward the end of the program showed her wearing an oversized version of her own signature style, which blocked much of her face.
The full text of Lang's love letter is below (it should be noted that he does say "Love, Erik" at the end of the note. A bit of research could have gone a long way for those eager to throw paint on LaBeouf).
"For Sia: I feel like this may be strange to say this here. I love you so. Punch me if I stop crying. I raised a white flag for you, defeated finally. If strength were made of broken pieces, you and I would always win. It is, though, and building and statues wink at us. I could squeeze you to zero. I'll never know another. What am I going to do? Punch me if I stop crying, and I'll do the same. Love, Erik."
