An apparent demo from Calvin Harris and Tinashe titled "5 AM" has leaked onto the Web. According to Spin, the rumored demo was originally intended for Rihanna, but she turned down the demo for her upcoming eighth LP, believed to be titled R8. Listen to the track below.
The track sees Calvin Harris dipping into some trap samples, with guitar chords in the break and fast-paced plucks carrying the drop. Tinashe croons about some unknown lover and partying late into the night.
Though little information is known about "5 AM," the way Tinashe sings seems like a dead giveaway that the track was meant to be for Rihanna. She does her best Rihanna impression and is almost spot on.
Harris, on a media promo run in the U.K., spoke about the demo and revealed that he had a track rejected by Rihanna.
"I had an album to finish, so I did that," he said to Kiss FM, via Digital Spy. "But I did one track and Tinashe wrote the top line, and I did all the music. I love it. But I don't think she was into it. So I don't know what is going to happen to that because it's really good."
According to MTV UK, "5 AM" was recorded at the same time when the pair was recording for Harris's latest studio LP Motion. The pair met up again for "Dollar Signs," which did appear on the "Blame" producer's album.
The track would probably be a radio hit if it was ever finished and released to the public, but seeing something like this rejected shows the level of competition that comes at the highest level of pop music.
