A rare set of Beatles recordings called The Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963 became available this morning for $40 on iTunes, Rolling Stone reports. They note that the rare material may have been released simply to establish copyrights for its recordings. European Union copyright laws stipulate that the band and their label may own the recordings for a total of 70 years only if officially published, according to the article.
The 59 songs on the album come from the year they produced their debut album With the Beatles. Rolling Stone mentions "A Taste of Honey," "I Saw Her Standing There," "From Me to You" and "One After 909" as particularly notable recordings in the set.
This isn't the first time a band has taken this approach with EU copyright law. According to the article, the Beach Boys, Motown and Bob Dylan have made rare recordings available recently. As to any other explanation for dropping these rare recordings, representatives from the Beatles have not issued a statement.
