Ty Dolla $ign has been making a name for himself since being featured on XXL's Freshman Class of 2014. Ahead of the spring release for his long-awaited album Free TC, Ty sat down with Hot 97's Ebro in the Morning for a chat.
They started off the conversation talking about how much weed he smokes and if he's ever done shrooms (he did for OutKast's set at Coachella) before launching into questions about his music.
First off was his new single with unlikely collaborator Charli XCX and Tinashe called "Drop That Kitty."
"Yeah she's hard," he said about Charli before explaining how the whole thing came together. "I went into the studio with Stargate, and they played me this hook with her on it, and I wanted to keep her on it. I did my verses, and then we got Tinashe on there as well. We just shot the video. It's going to be crazy.
He said that he and Charli didn't have a working relationship prior to "Drop That Kitty" but now that they've made contact, they plan to work together again.
"After ['Drop That Kitty'] we started talking on Twitter and then we got together personally and now it's all good, and we're going to continue to work," he told them.
When asked who is favorite producers are, he listed DJ Mustard, Hit-Boy, T-Fly, and Kanye West, before explaining his love for the late J Dilla.
"I wish J Dilla was still alive cause I'd be working with him everyday," he said. "I got everything he ever did. All the unreleased everything. I know DJ House Shoes he gave me all the stuff that didn't come out and everything. I got everything."
He also revealed that he sang back-up vocals on Kanye West's recent single "Only One" as well as a track that didn't make it onto Nicki Minaj's The Pinkprint. When asked if it bothered him that the song didn't get used, his advice was "don't trip" about it.
Co-host Peter Rosenberg then asked him about the collaborative L.A. hip-hop scene and how it came about.
"I think it's organic," Ty replied. "I wouldn't say all of us are on the same wave or whatever, [but there are] a lot and it's dope, for sure. I'm happy to be a part of it. For a long time it wasn't like that as you know. It was probably only one... I remember Game was poppin' I don't anyone else [during that period].
When asked what he considers himself in the music industry, be it a rapper or singer or producer, he said he sees him self as a "musician."
"I'm like, 'Anything that has to do with music, call me in,'" he explained. "Whether it be playing instruments, singing, just like laying backgrounds or producing the whole song or just being an artist myself, I just love music all the way around."
They also talked about his love life, which artists he has been riding with since the beginning, and more.
