Scarlett Johansson is the newest actor to jump into a music project during 2015 as she announced a collaboration with Haim member Este Haim, titled The Singles. Songwriter Holly Miranda, indie soul performer Julia Haltigan and soul vocalist Kendra Morris are also included in the group, which a press release describes as "super pop" (from NME).
"The idea was to write super-pop dance music written and performed by girls," Johansson said. "I love Grimes. And I love the Bangles. And I love the Go-Go's. I wanted it to be like those bands: ultra pop but also a little ironic, a little in on the joke."
Federal Prism, the label that will be releasing future music from the band (an album is yet to be confirmed), did release a single from The Singles on Friday, titled "Candy." Although Johansson handles the vocals, the vibe of the instrumentals is obviously in line with that of Haim, reveling in a somewhat '80s groove...which we suppose is what comes to mind when you ask us what "super pop" means. You can probably imagine the lyrical scene: innocent enough references to sugar all over the place, with just a few lines such as "I'm melting from your tongue" that get the fathers in the audience adjusting their collars.
Where The Singles go from here is anyone's guess, as at least Este has something else going on in the meantime, as Haim announced earlier this month at The Grammys that it was in the middle of recording the follow-up to 2013's Days Are Gone. That may make it tough for any serious time at the studio for the new group.
This isn't Johansson's first time at the music rodeo. She released an album of Tom Waits covers during 2008 with Anywhere I Lay My Head, and also collaborated with Pete Yorn on Break Up the next year.
