Metallica releases Anarctica concert as live album called 'Freeze 'Em All'

Metallica performed a gig in Antarctica earlier this month as part of a Coca-Cola promotion. The exclusive show is only the second to ever be performed on the continent. This year also marks the first time a band has played all seven continents in one year, as Consequence of Sound notes. Now the frozen metal pioneers have made the concert available as a live album download on LiveMetallica.com. The album, entitled Freeze 'Em All, can be purchased in a variety of digital formats ranging from $7.95 to $12.95. Album art work, featuring a guitar-wielding penguin, is also available.

The temperature was -7 degrees when they performed to a crowd of fewer than 200 inside a dome structure near a helipad at Carlini Station. In place of amps, the band transmitted audio through headphones. So theoretically, you're getting the same audio experience the attendees did with this live album — minus the cold.

The band played a 10-song set that included "One," "Enter Sandman," Master of Puppets," "Sad But True," and "Creeping Death." In a press statement the band called the Antarctica endeavor "The most unique show Metallica has ever done. The band, contest winners, research station scientists (from Russia, South Korea, China, Poland, Chile, Brazil and Germany), and the ship crew, all crammed in this little dome out on the helipad of Carlini Station in ANTARCTICA! The energy in the little dome was amazing! Words cannot describe how happy everyone was."
