Music video discovery app SongBooth has passed six million downloads. To mark this milestone, the company released an updated version of the app yesterday that works similar to a talent show. Aspiring artists can use the app to upload and share original pre-recorded 30-second videos to complement videos shot live within the app on smartphones and tablets. With this concept, they are starting their first-ever global talent contest called Project SongBooth One. The winner of the contest will go on tour with Grammy-nominated producer, songwriter and artist Ryan Leslie.
Grammy-award winning artist Miguel spoke about the app in a statement saying, "What I love about SongBooth is that it's so straightforward. It's really about highlighting the music in everyone's life without all of the clutter. Songbooth offers the opportunity for that next emerging, hungry artist to garner some attention with a viable audience. It's a great step forward for creative individuals and an amazingly simple and intuitive application. Not only is this an application for entertainment, but it really could be someone's big break. That is what made it appealing to me as a musician because there is something really tangible that people can work towards, along the way building their fan base."
The idea behind the update is to have the talent show concept be adapted from traditional televised format to a mobile platform. It also allows people who can't make tryouts for traditional shows to have the opportunity to be recognized.
"The reality is the next generation of change-makers —millennials— use their mobile devices to connect to the world around them more than any other type of platform, including TV," explained Gregory Lowe, CEO of Lowekey Media in a statement. "SongBooth is specifically designed for this, making it easy for the stars of tomorrow to reach the music industry over the platform they already use the most."
Ryan Leslie will choose one individual, who has uploaded at least one video, to join him on a ten-gig tour that includes shows in Europe.
