Will Smith stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live to promote his new film Focus and performed his DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Prince Fresh 1991 rap hit "Summertime" without his long-time collaborator.
During the past few weeks, Smith has performed many of his '90s hits on other talk shows and heavily hinted that he might be making a music comeback. Smith confirmed again that he's "been thinking about doing some music."
Kimmel asked the movie star if Smith got calls from young rappers asking him to collaborate with them. Smith laughed off the question, so don't expect to hear him featured on any new Tyga or Iggy Azalea tracks.
But for those eagerly waiting for a Will Smith music comeback can start getting a little excited. Smith revealed that he's starting to write down some rhymes, although his son Jaden is trying to convince him that voice-recording his lyrics on an iPhone would be so much easier.
But before his "Summertime" performance, in Jimmy Kimmel's new video Wall of America segment, where people video-call in to ask the guests questions, DJ Jazzy Jeff appeared and asked, "Are there any former collaborators that you're looking to restart a relationship with?"
Smith awkwardly laughed and sheepishly replied, "I was gonna call you, man."
DJ Jazzy Jeff stayed on the screen to dance in his seat to Smith's rendition of "Summertime." Jimmy Kimmel's band took a rest while Smith performed, although they still grooved to the beat and sang along with the audience.
For now though, Smith has his film career to focus (pun intended) on. In his latest film Focus, which premieres tonight, he plays a veteran con-man who takes a young woman (Margot Robbie) under his wing. After his After Earth box-office bomb, Smith is surprisingly not concerned about how well Focus does.
"It is a huge relief for me to not care whether or not Focus is number one or number 10 at the box office," Smith told The Guardian, "I've already gained everything I could have possibly hoped for by meeting the people and the creation of what we did together."
So for now, fans can just cross their fingers for a new Will Smith album.
