Pharrell Williams tops UK charts with 'Happy' single to end the year

Pharrell Williams has had a healthy 2013 already. The performer appeared in (even if he wasn't the main artist for) two of the highest selling singles of the year: "Blurred Lines" by Robin Thicke and "Get Lucky" by Daft Punk, for which the producer/vocalist sang in both hooks. Now the man behind the falsetto has ended the year on top of the charts in the UK.

"Happy," the track that Williams wrote and recorded for the film Despicable Me 2's soundtrack, has ended the year at the top of the UK Singles chart. The song was released as a single in both the United States and the UK on November 21. The track hasn't broken onto the American charts yet (the film was released in July in the U.S.), but it has found a market across the pond, slowly climbing and peaking at the top spot for the first time this week.

"Happy" knocked Sam Bailey's "Skyscraper," a Demi Lovato to no. 2 after just one week at the top. Bailey, the winner of the tenth series of the British X Factor, had topped the charts during the week of Christmas, a typical phenomena following the announcement of the show's winner at the end of the year. On the albums side of things, Robbie Williams managed to keep the top spot, as his Swing Both Ways stayed at no. 1 for at least one more week.

It's not all bad news for Bailey however. The vocalist will be opening for Beyoncé during the pop star's tour of the UK. Williams was heavily involved in the production of Beyoncé's surprise LP at the end of the year, so now he and Bailey have something in common.
