Wu-Tang Clan standouts Raekwon and Ghostface Killah may have come up with one of the best crowdsourcing rewards ever for its campaign in support of The Purple Tape Files, a documentary on the former's acclaimed 1995 album Only Built 4 Cuban Linx: Those who donate $200 will get the chance to have the hip-hop duo review your mixtape (from NME).
Unfortunately earlier reports on the subject didn't include advisories that it wasn't merely $200 per mixtape (which would, indeed, be the greatest deal in the world), but $200 per-track per mixtape. So while you could submit an entire album, choosing your best song might be the best bet. That said, this deal could pay off big time if you have legitimate chops.
"I will sit down and review the track submitted," Raekwon wrote on the crowdfunding page. "Then we'll open up our PERSONAL studios to our favorite artists from the auditions to host a recording session and work with YOU on how to improve that sound and make something iconic."
Then again, if you'e fooling yourself with your potential as a hip-hop artist, don't expect Rae and Ghostface to take it easy on you just because you gave to the cause. The emcee recently told Rolling Stone that the documentary represents a chance to be "as honest as possible, removing the filter from both ourselves and participants." So don't be surprised if he labels you a "biter" if you rip off his lingo.
This seems like a perfect opportunity for Drake (fan and writer of the track "Wu-Tang Forever") to submit his recent mixtape If You're Reading This It's Too Late for critical review from two of his icons. He can probably afford the $3,400. Then again, he might as well drop the $10,000 to get his name in the credits as a "Crowdfunding Producer"...another potential reward.
