M.I.A. has announced her departure from Jay Z's Roc Nation label via a post on Twitter saying, "2012 I dlted the M.I.A. #MATANGI LP. HAPPY NEW YEAR | 2014." The rapper signed a management deal with Roc Nation last year while at her main record label Interscope. She started speaking out against Interscope a year ago after Matangi was pushed back for being "too positive."
She hasn't given an official reason for leaving, but it's likely due to a strained relationship with the label.
Earlier this year, Roc Nation began operating under Universal Music Group, which also owns Interscope, and in July pulled a teaser clip for a Matangi documentary from YouTube because of copyright infringement. In response, M.I.A. told her fans that she had been "blacklist" and that they should "put [their] middle fingers up."
She is now advertising for a new management team on Twitter, posting, "MIA 4 the people by the people, looking for young people to work in fields of ART production / MUSIC/MERCH/FILM/WEB/MARKETING SndCV."
It will be interesting to see what type of team the rapper comes up with and how it will affect her music and brand going forward. While we wait for more news, check out the video for "Bad Girls" here.
