Tension has been high this year between Drake and Kendrick Lamar after the infamous "Control" verse rocked the hip-hop world. Without any real face-to-face conflict, we've seen Drake express his feelings on Lamar with mostly passive aggressive statements. Now, in response to an interview (via Consequence of Sound) with Vibe Magazine, Drake has actually given Lamar some props on his debut album.
He was asked whether he had any interest in making a concept album and replied, "I feel like the music that I write is utilized in life. It would be tough for me to go in conceptual storytelling. The last great concept album was [Kendrick Lamar's] good kid m.A.A.d. city — still obviously true to his life but very conceptual. Very specific stories that need to be told. I always say hats off to that album, that album's incredible, what an undertaking."
But Drake didn't give the compliment without later explaining why he isn't a concept rapper himself, "There are rappers that are good at telling stories about people that aren't themselves. There are people that have vast imaginations to go and make up a story just to achieve a point. I draw off life experiences."
So does writing about your own life mean you're a better rapper than someone rapping from another person's point of view? That's like trying to decide whether nonfiction stories are better than fiction. Plus we'd have to argue that Lamar definitely drew from life experiences on that effort as much as Drake has on his tracks.
What do you think? Was g.o.o.d kid m.A.A.d city a concept album in your opinion? Do you agree with Drake on what being a "concept rapper" is about? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below!
