American Idol runner-up Clay Aiken is quite possibly going from the performing stage to the political one. According to sources close to Aiken and the Democratic party, the "Invisible" singer is looking to run for Congress in 2014.
According to The Washington Blade, Aiken has taken some of the initial steps toward making a bid for office in North Carolina's 2nd congressional district for the U.S. House of Representatives.
Two sources in North Carolina's democratic party told the newspaper that Aiken has made phone calls, talked to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and met with political strategists and Raleigh Democratic Party officials in order to gauge support.
Furthermore, Aiken is "sounding and acting like a candidate."
If Aiken is to run for the U.S. House, it would be a difficult journey for the 35-year-old. Not only is North Carolina's 2nd district a republican-friendly area, but he wouldn't even by the only democrat in the race. Former North Carolina Commerce Secretary Keith Crisco formed an exploratory committee last month and is expected to announce his bid for the House next week.
Additionally, Aiken is quite the outsider. Not only does he have no political experience yet, he's also openly gay.
Neither Aiken nor the DCCC have confirmed or denied the singer's possible bid for Congress.
Lately, Aiken has remained somewhat out of the spotlight. He finished second on the fifth season of NBC's Celebrity Apprentice in 2012 and acted as Joseph in the off-Broadway production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat last summer.
