Elton John Calls for Boycott of Dolce & Gabbana

Elton John is among many people furious over comments made by fashion designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana of Dolce & Gabbana. John condemned their comments from a recent interview sharing their views against fertility treatments in same-sex families. He called for a boycott using the hashtag #BoycottDolceGabbana.

According to The Guardian, the designers were interviewed by Italian magazine Panorama and shared their thoughts on what they believe to be traditional families.

"I'm not convinced by those I call the children of chemicals, synthetic children," The Guardian reported a quote from Panorama attributed to the designers's comments. "Wombs for rent, sperm chosen from a catalogue ... psychiatrists are not ready to confront the effects of this experimentation."

BBC News reported another comment from the designers, stating, "You are born to a mother and a father. Or at least that's how it should be."

Dolce and Gabbana, both gay and formerly in a relationship together, received a lot of heat for that interview.

John posted an Instagram post declaring, "How dare you refer to my beautiful children as 'synthetic'. And shame on you for wagging your judgemental little fingers at IVF -- a miracle that has allowed legions of loving people, both straight and gay, to fulfil their dream of having children. Your archaic thinking is out of step with the times, just like your fashions. I shall never wear Dolce and Gabbana ever again. #BoycottDolceGabbana"

Both designers have since released statements Sunday, March 15, clarifying their comments in the midst of the uproar.

"It was never our intention to judge other people's choices. We do believe in freedom and love," Gabbana said, according to Billboard.

Dolce explained that his traditional Sicilian family was "made up of a mother, a father and children. I am very well aware of the fact that there are other types of families and they are as legitimate as the one I've known."

Other stars like Ricky Martin have expressed their disappointment in the designers's remarks.

Martin tweeted,

"@dolcegabbana ur voices R 2powerfull 2B spreading so much h8 https://bit.ly/1CiY63B Wake up,Its 2015 Luv urselves guys #boycottdolcegabbana."

The controversial comments come on the heels of the designers's recent praise for sending a pregnant model down the runway.
