This event is not for the lighthearted. Starting bright and early in the morning a little after 8 a.m., Kaskade, Steve Aoki and A-Trak will take over the Snake Pit on race day for the Indy 500 this year.
The event marries two unexpected partners -- electronic music and racing -- in the heart of America, making this one of the oddest dance music concerts in the country. The move toward having DJs perform instead of rockers like in the past is a clear attempt to try and cater to a younger market by the IndyCar series.
This year's edition will take place May 24. The inclusion of DJs the caliber of Kaskade, Steve Aoki and A-trak shows organizers are committed to bringing big-name talent to the 99th running of the Indianapolis 500.
2014 saw a trio of star DJs also join the fun in the Snake Pit. Hardwell, Nervo and Dillon Francis all performed. The transition from rock and hip-hop to EDM really took hold in 2012, when Krewella and Benny Benassi performed. 2013 featured Diplo, Afrojack and Topher Jones.
Occurring over Memorial Day weekend, this morning set gives artists an opportunity to double dip on the day with another set later on at a festival, like the freedom it gives Kaskade for Electric Daisy Carnival New York.
It will not just be DJs who will perform at the Indy 500 this year. On Carb Day, the Friday before the race, OAR, Jane's Addiction and 38 Special will perform to give a little balance to the musical selections. There are generally a few cover bands around the grounds, notably on Saturday night, if you go looking.
Tickets are on sale for the Snake Pit celebration at different tiers for those who already bought raceday tickets and those who just want to see the concert. Watch the teaser video below.
