Kendrick Lamar: set the Spotify record
To Pimp A Butterfly seems to be a sure thing for No. 1 on the March 25 chart. Expectations seem to be in the 300k range, with Billboard reporting that the "The Blacker the Berry" rapper will sell 325,000 album equivalent units and Hits Daily Double reporting a higher number, with 325k in sales and an additional 25,000 to 50,000 album equivalent streams and single downloads, for a figure closer to 375,000 units.
(The Billboard 200 chart began to factor in streams in December 2014. 10 individual songs downloaded from an album equals one album purchased, and 1500 streams from that album is considered one album sold.)
This beats Lamar's debut studio album good kid, m.A.A.d. city, which debuter at No. 2 in 2012 with 241,000 copies sold.
To Pimp A Butterfly was aided largely by hype surrounding the release and the peculiar rollout of To Pimp A Butterfly. The album, originally due for release on March 23, was sent to the iTunes store shortly after midnight on Monday, March 16, and was available for streaming on Spotify. The album is just now beginning to appear in brick-and-mortar stores across the country, though it is available for download on iTunes after getting pulled shortly on Monday.
