On March 31, the tenth installment of the tribute series thrown by City Winery owner Michael Dorf will honor Paul Simon at New York City's Carnegie Hall. Dorf has put on the event over the previous nine years to raise money for music education.
This year, performances will come from The Civil Wars' Joy Williams, soul singer Bettye LaVette, Hüsker Dü's Bob Mould. Also, Steely Dan's lead guitarist Jon Herington and jazz singer Madeleine Peyroux will share the stage with performances from singer-songwriter Dan Wilson, cellist Ben Sollee and the composer Allen Toussaint.
Over the years, the event has raised a lot of money for the cause, and Dorf predicts that with the addition of this year's Simon tribute, it will have hit the $1 million mark, according to The New York Times. Proceeds from this year's show will go to benefit the American Symphony Orchestra's Music Notes, Church Street School for Music and Art, Young Audiences New York, Fixing Instruments for Kids in Schools, Little Kids Rock and the Center for Arts Education.
The concert series has previously paid tribute to the Rolling Stones, Joni Mitchel, Bob Dylan, Elton John, Neil Young and the Who. In 2007 Bruce Springsteen showed up for his own tribute show and played an encore performance of "The Promised Land" and "Rosalita." At 2009's tribute for R.E.M., Michael Stipe, Peter Buck and Mike Mills joined Patti Smith on the stage. And last year, during Prince's tribute, the Roots took charge as the house band next to guest performers like Booker T. Jones, D'Angelo and Elvis Costello.
