James Murphy: We Used to Dance
The minute track plays more like a lullaby. There's nothing fancy about what Murphy did here, but the stripped-down version is most likely a part of the film's score. It sounds like some filler music or a reprise after Bowie's version plays (the original is the closer on the soundtrack). Listen to it below via The Dissolve.
Lionel Richie, A Tribe Called Quest and Haim all make appearance's on the movie's soundtrack (full list below).
Baumbach and Murphy last worked together on 2010's Greenberg, which also starred Stiller. The movie was Murphy's debut film score. The soundtrack included LCD Soundsystem, The Sonics and Duran Duran. He talked about the gig prior to Greenberg's release.
"Noah and I had a good talk about not making a score but making songs. I tend to not like scores. I like old scores that are very specific but, typically, contemporary scores drive me crazy," he told Pitchfork. "It's the musical equivalent of a poetry slam - just mood tones and spacey surround-sound sh*t. So I wrote a bunch of songs that are not directly about the movie but are like the songs that we would pick out of our record collections to illustrate the movie."
LCD Soundsystem played its last show in 2011. The farewell concert was highlighted in the documentary Shut Up and Play the Hits. Murphy has since worked with Arcade Fire on 2013's Reflektor album and done remixes for the 2014 U.S. Open.
