Work on a park dedicated to the legacy of guitarist and frontman Jimi Hendrix is set to get underway in Seattle after four years of planning and fundraising. The city announced that ERRG, Inc. had won a bid to develop the simply-titled "Jimi Hendrix Park," and will begin next month, nearly nine months after ground was broken during August last year (from Billboard).
"The Jimi Hendrix Park is the culmination of years of hard work, collaboration, creative input, and generosity invested in something we all believed in and constructed to commemorate an amazing human being,"said Jimi's sister and the founder and director of the Jimi Hendrix Park Foundation, Janie Hendrix. "It is our hope that for generations, it will exist as more than an attraction or point of interest, but a place of homage to one of Seattle's own. The landscaping, the artistic design, and the ambience all mimic the vibe of the persona of Jimi, whom this park honors."
The highlight of the park, which covers 2.5 acres, will feature a walkway in the shape of a guitar, twisting diagonally through the park and listing event's in the guitarist's life chronologically. The project will also feature shows a futuristic "Soundwave wall," according to the website for the park. An illustrated diagram from Rolling Stone seems to indicate there will be several ponds on the property. The location will be in the city's central district, located near to Seattle's Northwest African American Museum.
The first phase of the project will be dubbed "Little Wing," a reference to Hendrix's hit song of the same name, and is expected to cost around $1.4 million overall.
