Unlike "What Kind of Man," which begins small and quiet and then builds into one of Florence + The Machine's more explosive and powerful songs to date, "St. Jude" keeps things soft and contemplative throughout its whole four minutes, thirty-eight seconds.
Calling out to the "patron saint of lost causes," Welch's cry is set against a touch of horn and a steady, small beat that has the pace of a heartbeat. The peacefulness of this song recalls My Brightest Diamond, but Welch's own croon helps to make this song one of Florence + The Machine's most vulnerable singles to date.
In the music video, Welch emerges from the greenery of "How Big How Blue How Beautiful" soaking wet, before getting picked up and carried by a man. Soon, she emerges on her own two feet, walking through the streets of suburbia, praying in church and heading back to the grounds from which she came.
